GENERAL CLASSES

The Alliance Française of Los Angeles offers a wide array of classes and specialized courses (see our Workshops page) all year round. Our calendar is organized in 8-week sessions (excepte for the SUMMER II session which is a 4-week session). For each session, we offer 8-week and 4-week programs.

We require a minimum of 3 students to open a course and enroll no more than 8 students per class. Our average class size is 4 to 6 students - an impressive student to teacher ratio.

Language classes cover 3 levels: Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level is divided into steps, with a new step taught each session. Some classes meet once a week and others meet twice a week (see our class schedule for details).

Our curriculum has been modeled after the Common European Framework standards and has been developed as a part of the AF FRAMES project (AF French American Educational Standards). We utilize method ALTER EGO, a new series that is fast becoming the primary French teaching tool at Alliances Françaises around the world. With respect to DELF/DALF exam and the levels recognized by the Common European Framework standards, ALTER EGO 1 corresponds to A1/A2 and ALTER EGO 2 reaches into B1.
Teachers and students work with a student textbook, a workbook and an audio CD.

The levels are classified as follows:

Adult beginner classes (class names: Beginner 1 to Beginner 5, Prep to DELF Exam A1/A2)

Beginner classes focus on conversational French with an emphasis on active student participation. While you discover the everyday vocabulary and practice your conversational skills, you will learn the basics of grammar and build a solid foundation on which to expand your knowledge of French.

See our curriculum page for details.

REQUIRED MATERIAL: Alter Ego 1

Hachette Français langue étrangère

(can be purchased at www.europeanbook.com)

Adult intermediate classes (class names: Intermediate 1 to Intermediate 5, Prep to DELF Exam B1/B2)

Our Intermediate classes reinforce both oral and written communication skills. All courses are based on active conversation, reading and grammar review. At the end of the intermediate classes, you will have reached an independent command of the language.
